DeveloperWeek Bay Area Re-cap

March 18, 2019 1 Views

Introduction

Hosting DeveloperWeek Bay Area at the Oakland Convention Center in the heart of Oakland's City Center was a terrific idea, and despite the Teacher’s Strike giving the local cops some work to do traffic-wise, the warm bright sun reflected the positive spirits of attendees. Oakland was fun and the city has its own architectural charms worth seeing. Outside of the Convention Center on Friday the streets were buzzing with the local Farmers Market. Walking through it before the conference opened was wonderful and helped offset the standard convention eats at the show and convention.

Attendance and Rising Stars

About 8000+ attendees (4x the size of DeveloperWeek Austin, which itself was well-attended), experienced a theme of “The DevTech Age” inspiring developers. Attendees seemed to be getting a lot of value out of this conference, exhibition, trade show, and meeting place. Two Conferences really stood out in my mind as being especially useful to the JavaScript world: naturally, the JavaScript conference was extremely well attended, but the API and Microservice track was also fascinating. Our friends at Google, who invented and support Angular, won a much-deserved award for Angular itself (a “Devies”Award for 2019), which is exciting for us at Sencha because of our recent release of ExtAngular (analogous to Ext JS 6.7 and ExtReact 6.7). Being able to deliver 115+ user interface components into the Angular programming world and paradigm was a big deal at the show. At the Sencha and Embarcadero (our sister company) joint booth, we did a lot of demonstrations of ExtAngular and ExtReact and our friends at Embarcadero were showing off C++ Studio. A large number of React and Angular developers showed up to learn how using ExtAngular and ExtReact can shave weeks or months off critical schedules, and investing in learning these powerful user interface libraries results in stunning data-rich applications. In keeping with the DevTech Age theme, of course these applications work not only on nearly all modern browsers but also work seamlessly on mobile devices.

The biggest demand from people who showed up at our booth was the big data grid example and the rich data analytics grid - in case you missed it or didn't have time, check out our Grid and Pivot Grid examples.

In case you missed the overview, Ext JS, ExtReact, and ExtAngular enable organizations to add powerful analytics capabilities to their web applications with Sencha Pivot Grid. It allows users to summarize, aggregate and analyze multidimensional data to make more informed decisions. The Sencha Grid enables organizations to handle millions of records and provides out of- the box functionality such as sorting, grouping, column locking, and summary rows. The Exporter plugin enables the developer to export your Ext JS Grid and Pivot Grid data in a variety of different formats. It supports the standard XLSX, XML, CSV, TSV, and HTML formats, and allows you to configure the visible (displayed) or invisible (hidden) portions of your data exports. The Exporter plugin also supports basic styling of the exported documents.
Sencha’s Sandeep Adwankar, Senior Product Manager, presented a forward-thinking presentation, “Breath new life into your existing JavaScript components with Web Components.” From the Abstract:
You probably have an existing JavaScript application using components that you love, maybe a grid, some graphs, etc. Perhaps today you use Angular and your company is thinking about moving to React, or Vue, and with new frameworks appearing every week, who knows what is next. How do you bring along those great components you have been using? That is where Web Components fits in!! In this session we will look at how you can use your favorite components in Angular and React by building to the components specification of these frameworks. And then we will look at the Web Components spec to use those existing components you know and love in any framework -including no framework at all!
The session was incredibly well-attended and touched on the new web technologies coming down the pike for Sencha, such as Web Components. To see this presentation click here.

Summary

Even though the hot new buzz-fields of computing, IoT and Blockchain were explored by the Conference, it was clear that developers building platforms, frameworks, and API’s to enable new kinds of services over the Internet and the World Wide Web were fascinating even as the vast majority of attendees focused on how to build exciting, graphically-rich, data-intensive applications. One thing is for sure: we can all learn from each other! To learn more and access free trial downloads or a limited commercial license of Ext JS Community Edition, visit staging.sencha.com. There is no obligation to purchase, and on Sencha’s website you’ll find valuable, time-saving education and training materials as well as examples that will have you up and running quickly using beautifully-designed UI components.
